Thomas R. Jaworowski, 77, a resident of Palo Alto, died Dec. 19.
He was born in Detroit, Mich. He spent his childhood in Dearborn, Mich. He attended Vanderbilt University in Tennessee on a naval ROTC scholarship. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in physics, he spent three years on active naval duty. He remained in the Naval Reserve until retirement in 1990.
After leaving active duty, he attended MIT and worked at Westinghouse Atomic Power Division. In the late 1950s, he moved to Palo Alto and attended Stanford University. Shortly after moving to California, he met his wife, Eileen, whom he married in 1961. In 1973, he began working for Bechtel Corporation in San Francisco, where he remained until his retirement in 1994.
He was a lifelong Catholic who was very active in his church community. He was involved in issues of faith and of social justice, devoting significant time to the causes of poverty, low-income housing, affordable health care and the abolition of the death penalty.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Jaworowski and Shaun Gordon of Palo Alto; sister, Lucy Jaworowski of Dearborn, Mich.; brother, Emil Jaworowski of Covington, Ky.; and one granddaughter.
