Roger Justice Fleischmann September 23, 1934 – March 5, 2025

Roger Justice Fleischmann, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, accomplished attorney, and passionate golfer, passed away peacefully on March 5, 2025 in Portola Valley, California, at the age of 90.

Born on September 23, 1934 in Buffalo, New York, Roger grew up on the East Coast before settling in Palo Alto with his parents. He attended Palo Alto High School before continuing his education at Harvard College, where he was a member of the men's varsity golf team and graduated magna cum laude in 1956. He went on to earn his law degree from Harvard Law School in 1959, launching a distinguished legal career that spanned decades. On New Year's Eve 1957 a blind date in Palo Alto with Marty Stennis led to their marriage in June 1959. They eventually settled in Mill Valley, California where they raised their two children.

An old-school generalist, Roger's law practice encompassed the areas of business and civil litigation, acquisitions, securities and antitrust, health care, taxation, real estate, estate planning and probate law, international business, finance, employee benefits and commercial law. Among his many professional accomplishments, Roger took particular delight in his successful pro bono representation of a group of Mill Valley residents seeking the right to public nudity in that city's parks. His sharp legal mind, dedication to civil liberties, and sense of humor made him a formidable advocate—both in the courtroom and in life.

Beyond his legal work, Roger had a deep love for golf, a sport that brought him joy, friendships, and countless hours on the course—though, to his great chagrin, he never managed to score a hole-in-one. After retiring from law practice he spent much of his free time at the Olympic Country Club in San Francisco, when he was not traveling the world with Marty, researching his family's genealogy, or building toys for his grandchildren in his garage workshop.

Throughout his long life, Roger treasured his connections to his large and extended family in Buffalo, as well as the lifelong friendships he built with his Paly High friends and his close-knit group of Dunster House cronies from his undergraduate days at Harvard.

Roger’s greatest pride was his family. Preceded in death by his parents Edwin and Clover and his older brother Hartly, he is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Martha Ann (Stennis); his son, Roger Jr. (Madeline); his daughter, Susan (Mark Brazeal); and six cherished grandchildren. His keen intellect, strong character, and sense of humor will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A private service will be held in several months' time.
