Joan Bruce, 79, a former Palo Alto teacher, died June 3 at Stanford Hospital after a short illness.
She was born in Long Beach, Calif. She graduated from Occidental College in 1951 and received a master's degree in education from Stanford University in 1965. She taught at Walter Hays and Escondido elementary schools in Palo Alto as well as at a Maori school in New Zealand, a nursery school in England and on an Indian reservation in Arizona.
After retiring from the Palo Alto Unified School District in 1993, she moved to the Sequoias, a Portola Valley retirement community.
Throughout her lifetime she enjoyed traveling to other countries and hiking on the Peninsula, the Sierra, and in Washington and Switzerland.

Miss Bruce, the best teacher I had not only in school but in life. She let her students see the world only with eyes and heart, and love nature more than oneself. Love you Miss Bruce. From Chile, where the ice ends!!
