Palo Alto, California

Longtime Palo Alto resident Helen Margaret Portz Ogle, 94, passed away March 6th, 2017.

Helen grew up in Flossmoor, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in Latin American Relations and a minor in Spanish. During World War II, she worked in the Foreign Service. After the war, she met and married Hugh Malcolm Ogle, her husband of 56 years. They moved to Palo Alto with their four children in 1956. Soon after the death of her husband in 2003, Helen moved to Channing House, where she resided for the rest of her life.

Painting, especially watercolors, was a lifelong passion for Helen, and she was for many years active in the Palo Alto Art Club (now the Pacific Art League). Helen was also an avid musician and an enthusiast for languages; she encouraged her children particularly in these areas.

Helen is survived by three of her children, Nancy (Bangor, Maine), Charles and wife Susan (Menlo Park), and Roger (Santa Clara), and also daughter-in-law Barbara (Olympia, Washington); grandchildren, Brian and wife Alenda (Santa Barbara), Paul (Los Angeles) and Laura (Oakland); and great-grandson Elliot (Santa Barbara).
