David B. Downie

Dr. David B. Downie, a renowned and respected surgeon at Camino Medical Group and El Camino Hospital, died unexpectedly on April 16. He was 66.
Downie was born July 17, 1942 in Detroit, Mich. to the Rev. Dr. Herbert and Lillian Downie. He attended school in Southern California, graduating from USC School of Medicine in 1968. After medical school, he moved to the Bay Area with his wife, Kathie, and completed his internship at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
After returning from Vietnam as a captain in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, Downie completed his residency in otolaryngology head and neck surgery at Stanford University School of Medicine, where in his later years he was an associate professor. Downie retired after 25 years as a physician, but continued to volunteer as chief medical consultant at the RotaCare Clinic in Mountain View.
He is survived by his wife, Edna Cate Downie of Cupertino; son and daughter-in-law Jeff and Amber Downie; daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Kelly Coan; first wife Kathie Lloyd of San Jose; and many extended family members.
